(Days/Festivals often mentioned in Chinese Media, Part II, Contemporary Ones
Other Special Days)
The “Days” listed below are days with specific significance with either social or political touch. When any of these days approaches, commentators would write something to reflect the presence of them.
Tree Planting Day (March the 12th): Originally a day marking the death of Dr. Sun Yet-sen. Writers would raise the awareness of environmental issues, especially desertification of arable lands and on-going deforestation.
Consumers' Rights Day (March the 15th): Around this date, lots of commentating piece would focus on incidents of violation of consumers' rights, calling on the society to pay due attention to these problems, including food safety, product safety, and issues of poor quality in counterfeited goods.
International Earth Day (April the 22nd): This is a day in the year that the UN establishes for the world, and Chinese commentators would follow suit in calling the Chinese mass to pay greater attention to various environmental issues home and abroad: air quality, conservation of clean potable water, incidents of water pollution, trans-border environmental hazards, pollution by factory waste, pollution by living & human waste, etc.
Victory Day (September the 3rd): This is a day filled with political significance, governmental media would not miss the chance to issue commentary to commemorate the history in which lots of soldiers and civilians lost their lives (during the Anti-Japan War of 1937-1945), or even to heap up nationalist passion (in case of escalated Sino-Japan tension), while other commentators also would wish to throw light back upon lessons to be drawn from this war taking place in China, emphasizing the current China's defensive philosophy in preparedness and fearlessness.
The views or discussions brought up by the "special days" above may vary from each other, there could be a shared view point by many commentators:
As these days will remind people of some issues to look into, people seem to erase everything once these dates were passed, (all ripples vanish after the boat passes). The sad thing is, the concerns are short-lived, and the policies fall short from enforcement.
